Open Source Software

Technology Open source software is changing the way the Internet works. It is the technology that has been the catalyst for the growth of the Internet the last several years. No longer are there concerns about the integrity of Open Source software, in fact in many cases the software that is developed by the Open Source Community is much more stable and secure then those projects developed in a closed environment. One only has to look at the Microsoft VS Linux debates to see the positive effects that the Open Source Community can have on a project. We thought it was time to take a look at what the Open Source Community is actually doing and try and dispel the rumor that would say free software is poor quality software.

So what exactly is Open Source?

Open source usually starts with a small group of developers that get an idea for an application. The very basics are started and then at the infant stage of the software development the software is released to the Open Source development community for modification, additions, security enhancements and overall improvement of the source code. In a closed environment this could never happen, as the source code is deemed secret. This is why after a new release from a closed environment (like Microsoft) you see a flurry of security fixes, patches and general bug fixes being released.

Even now a solid argument can be made that the Open Source community has developed a much better server side operating system then those developed in a closed environment. Some of the key applications include Sendmail, Linux, Apache and MySQL, osCommerce along with languages like Java and Perl, and mark-up languages such as HTML, WML and XML all have their development roots in the Open source community. These products and languages are all very much in widespread use on the Internet and are generally considered to be as good (and in some cases) far better then their commercial counterparts.

The point being that just because software is free does not mean it's poor quality. Many times it has much better support, stability and features because of the massive amount of developers that contribute to the projects.

Thanks in large part to the Open Source Community, the Internet continues to be *free*.
