How to choose a Web Host
Posted on Jul 14, 2003 - 03:37 PM by Watcher Print Printer friendly page  Email
Web Hosting One of the most important people you will need for your online presence is your Web Host. The designer makes your site great looking, the various scripts and Programmers create the functionality but the Web Host is the one that ensures all the hard work is made available online. With such a dependency on one company the stability and quality of that host is of utmost importance. So how do you choose which one to pick?

The choice is not easy and there are many pitfalls. The most important question that needs an answer before the search begins is this one; "What will you have online"?

Now if your answer is a family web site with just a few visitors then you can take more of a risk in your choices. If you are running a busy site where visitors are tracked by the hour instead of the month, the choice becomes much more difficult. Here are some steps that will help narrow down your choices. We will assume that you are not looking for the cheapest space you can find on the Internet, rather that you are looking for a good value for your dollar.

Let's take a few red flags and eliminate them right out of the gate.

1) If you see the words "Unlimited" in regards to disc space or bandwidth then there is no need to look at them any longer. Avoid them; there is no such thing as "Unlimited".

2) If the host requires that you pay by the year, it means you can pass them by as well.

3) If there are no Terms of Service (TOS) or Acceptable Use Policy (AUP) then avoid them.

4) If their payment page is unsecured (No HTTPS in the header) avoid them. By the same token if they only offer one means of payment such as PayPal, which should raise some flags as well.

Remember, if it sounds too good to be true it probably is. These 4 areas will weed out quite a few Hosts to start with. Now lets get into this a little bit deeper. One of the first things you want to know is how long has the host been in business. There is no hard fast way to know for sure but a good indicator could be the year their domain was registered. You can easily find out this information by going to http:/www.domainwhitepages.com and typing in the Host's URL. You will be able to determine when the Domain was registered. While less then a year in business might be ok, I would certainly hesitate with someone that has a brand new domain less then a few months old.

Now let's move onto the TOS/AUP. These items are the legal protection for a web host. These documents dictate to you what you can or cannot do as a client. You should read these documents thoroughly! I have seen a TOS exclude zipped files, exe files, photos, files older then 30 days, just to name a few. I have also seen where sites had to be updated weekly! Now what all this means to you is that a Host can terminate your account, quite possibly keep your money without you realizing what it is you did wrong. The TOS/AUP is one of your primary focuses as far as your choices go. You can eliminate the ones that have ridiculous stipulations in their TOS/AUP. Basically as long as it is legal and doesn't damage anyone else in your shared environment, you should be able to do it.

So far we have been able to learn quite a bit about the web hosts on our list and we have not even contacted them yet. If some of the hosts on our list of perspectives are still with us it will now be time to contact them with our questions. We will cover this area in depth with our next article.

See you then!
