Chat system innovations
Posted on Jan 03, 2003 - 07:32 PM by Watcher Print Printer friendly page  Email
Chatrooms Ten years ago a chat system was the ability to talk real time with a group of people and a white background with scrolling words. We sure have "come a long way baby"! Chat system innovations are taking steps to make chatrooms, truly virtual rooms.

A few years ago Excite and Ubique teamed up to provide a new chat innovation called Virtual Places. At that time there were tens of thousands of users and the future looked bright. Since that time and the big Internet Decline of the 90's Chat systems have become "Pay-Per-View" specialists. They have also taken strides to the 3 dimensional realm.

Chat systems such as activeworlds.com have put together 3 dimnesional chat rooms and characters to allow chatters not just a unique way to communicate, but a way to more effectively role play as well. From becoming a cowboy in a saloon to an astronaut haning out on the moon. The system is completely interactive and depends on the development of new "chat rooms" from the participants. Very interesting indeed.

Next we have Habbo Hotel located at habbohotel.com. This was a unique system developed for the teens in the UK. Here is a quote from their main page:

"Habbo Hotel isn't just about chatting. You actually walk or dance your way between bars, clubs, pubs and games halls. If you want to speak to someone, you have to be standing near enough for them hear you, unless you want to shout. Just as you'd get a drink in a normal café or pub, you can order one at one of our bars - just one thing: Habbo Hotel is alcohol-free."

Very cool stuff for the kids!

Last of the three newer chat systems I looked at is Cyber Town located at cybertown.com. Here is a brief description from their site:
"A private 3D VR (virtual reality) home with your own personal chat, inbox, message board and free e-mail. You can invite your friends over to hang out, chat and party - all in full 3D! The Cybertown shopping malls and Flea Markets where you can buy, sell or trade cool 3D objects for your home.
A Virtual Pet for your home. Customizable bodies to use in the 3D worlds. Ongoing Role-Playing Games. Interesting Clubs with 3D Clubhouses to join or start your own.
Awesome movie theaters and music concerts. The Black Sun Club where you can dance in 3D and listen to your favorite tunes. "

These are just three examples of the many new and technologically advanced chat systems that are being developed today. Looking back 10 years ago and looking forward 10 years from now I would not be a bit surprised to see true virtual chat systems that will develop online communities the likes we can only guess at.

I have actually checked out worlds and palace,,,, but with a 500mHz CPU and 384 Mg of RAM it kills my pc.... Guess I need to up-grade before I can enjoy it...=).
Most of worlds and palace are free too which is a major plus.
What does the future hold in our own internet home... I have my theories... time will tell.
